Following Decal's EP earlier this year on Invisible Agent, Ikeaboy drops an EP that covers underground electro's many sounds. Apart from the ambient intro 'flashdead', there's the tight, bleepy breaks of 'Palletscrap' and the Detroit chords of 'Bypass Naas Bass'. Ikeaboy also has a fondness for craniun-splitting basslines and the malevolent, lunging bass of 'Yellow Metal', as well as Warren Daly's ominous version of the same track, is the stuff that the worst nightmares are made of.

Damian Tubbritt aka Ikeaboy has been threatening to do a record like this for a long time. While his appetite for powerful electro bass in previous outings has been clear, this time he has set the record straight beyond any doubt. Including a ghoulish, dub shaking remix from Sir Real and a sinister dancefloor interpretation from label boss Warren Daly, it's the weird jerking feel of ghetto paced tracks like "Pallet Scrap" and "Yellow Metal", that make this a secret weapon for bass freaks everywhere. An Irish release that deserves your attention, this is storming stuff.
8/10
This track starts out with an unassuming kick and bassline. Chymera's clean percussion builds up gently and leads into a glimmering, arp-type melody.
An almost lost-sounding chime keeps rumbling under the surface, and as the track is about to peak, Chymera releases the filters with swirling pads, sending the dancefloor into another stratosphere.
This is a true epic! RB

Boasts the same sense of foreboading and understated dynamics as classic Robert hood material.

The original version isn't available on this release, but Edwin James's combination of austere chords with vocal snippets and a spiralling acid climax proves that remixes aren't always meant as a secondary consideration. RB

A LOCAL aspiring DJ, Johnny Pluse from Trim, is on the verge of making it into the big time with the release of his new album ‘Funky 5 Years Ago’. Pluse has been dj-ing since he got his decks at the age of 15 and started mixing hip-hop. He moved to London at 19 and his first track ‘Burn ur Garage’ was signed to GBT records. However, that record company didn’t last the distance, meaning nothing was released!
After moving back to Ireland a few years later, he got his act together and recorded ‘Dark n Dim’ with the renowned Spooky. In 2000 Pluse started running the club night ‘Bassism’ in various venues around Meath, but you can only have so much of a good thing and, after some extremely successful gigs, Pluse went in another direction. He did an unofficial mix of Ian Brown’s ‘Time Is My Everything’ which got a good reaction from XFM London and Spin FM. Then, after much hype, he started recording ‘Funky 5 Years Ago’ and availed of the talented services of local Musician, Fay Ray. The album, with a mixture of dim-hop, breaks and funky beats, was finished early last year and so ‘Funky 5 Years Ago’ was born. The outstanding album has got a good response from Irish djs and their colleagues across the water. In a recent issue of IDJ magazine Dave Jenkins gave it 3/5, calling it an essential purchase.
Some of the renowned DJs who have given the album air time and a thumbs up include John Gibbons (Spin FM), Eddy Temple Morris (XFM), Mr Spring (2FM), John Power Mark Kavanagh, Johnny Moy (Clampdown) Invisible Agen Records, Askillz (Fingerlickin records UK), Conor G (2FM) Dan Hegarty (2FM and DJ Pau Greenwood. A new re-mixed version of the album will surface later this year on Invisible Agent Records on CD and Digital download. There will also be a number of live dates in 2007 to promote the album and fans of Pluse can keep up to date with his exploits on www.myspace.com/djjohnnypluse

Alan O'Boyle kickstarts 2007 in flying form. "Look So Fine" employs his trademark churning bass and razor sharp breaks, but his use of a sassy female vocal sample means that for the first time, it's possible to hum an underground electro track as you walk down the street. It's not possible to do the same with "Dummy No4" or "Bad Bones", but they do effectively fuse infectious Warpy hooks with drum'n'bass and in-your-face breaks. RB

Corrugated Tunnel is the brainchild of Edwin James on of the key players in Ireland's burgeoining electro scene and, on the evidence of this versatile debut, a man with enormous production potential. ' We Are Electronix' pinballs its way around genres for fun, taking elements of acid, electro, house and techno to create a unique sound that, if you had to nail it down, probably sits in the corner marked 'Intelligent-Techno-Meets-Acidy-Electronia'
What ever the definition, this is quality stuff - from the straight-up electro of 'Rockstars' to the old-school squelch of 'The Bionic Hustle' and moddy, vocoder-led electronica of 'Not Coming Back'. And even if 'The Snare's' crashing drumbeats come as a bit of a cold-shower shock, what's probably going to make you love Corrugated Tunnel more than anything are the string-soaked atmospherics of tracks like 'Chain Smoking monkey' and '303 on 31st and Fifth'- stonewall future classics which merit comparison to Orbital's most emotional output and hint a greatness all of their own.
We are impressed. M7/M8
