Happy Equinox! Best of Dub, Ragga, Dubstep, Drum & Bass: Equinox, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Radioactive Man | Warren Daly | Mantua Festival

Got your balance right?

September Equinox is a time of balance when “day and night are equal”, well almost equal. It marks the beginning of winter preparations and is a time to respect the impending dark while giving thanks to the sunlight.

Spinning some tunes in celebration

To celebrate the sun crossing the celestial equator I am playing a selection of Dub, Ragga, Dubstep, Drum & Bass at Equinox, Phnom Penh tonight. The party starts at 9pm and runs until late. So, if you’re up for getting your pagan wiggle on, spacing out to some deep bass or just kicking back and relaxing, come on down and have some fun. Big shout out to Hipparchus (Greek astronomer and mathematician), have a happy Moon festival. 中秋節

Swarm Intelligence: blurring the lines between bass heavy Dubstep, driving Electro and distorted Techno

Swarm Intelligence – ‘On the edge’ EP

Originally from Ireland, Berlin based Simon Hayes has a fetish for the musically obscene. Expect a twisted mega-mash of grime, industrial Techno and jungle when he hits the Technics. On the production side his ability to fuse grimey deep bass with neck-snapping Electro and distorted Techno is second to none.

It gives us great pleasure to release this debut EP from Swarm Intelligence on Invisible Agent. Click here to go to the release page

Sort out your digital life, get ready to tag

We all know tagging is important, right?  After observing a friend spend endless hours submerged in iTunes, meticulously tagging and rating their music collection track by track, I realized I was naive to think most online music distributors tag their files correctly. You know your digital life is a mess when you see files called ‘Track 01.mp3′ only to open it up and reveal the tag displays ‘track 1 – unknown artist’. Never fear, I am going to explain what tagging is and a suggest a tool you can use to make your life easier.

What are ID3 tags?

Tags allow useful information such as the title, artist, album, track number, and other information to be stored within a music file. To keep things simple, I am going to deal with ID3 Version 1 tags. Don’t worry, it’s not overly complicated. Type 1 tags are the most basic, but most common and useful tags. Here is a list of the fields available with ID3 Version 1 tags:

  • Title – The name of the track
  • Artist – The artist’s name
  • Album – The album or EP name
  • Year – The year of release
  • Comment – A note about the music
  • Track – Track number
  • Genre – The type of music, chosen from a set list covering most genres

Why should I tag my music collection?

There are a number of reasons to tag your files. Your music player is capable of searching by tag, so if you’re in the mood for some Jazz, it will list all the tracks in your collection that have Jazz stored in the Genre field. If you wish to promote indie record labels, your friend’s garage band or a Netlabel you can use programs like Audioscrobbler a free online service that tracks your listening habits by reading ID3 tags and displays your top artists and recent tracks for all to see and share. Independent record labels or producers will get a little more exposure as their play count increases and depending on the service they might even be paid a few cents for each play.

How do I tag my MP3 files?

A multitude of tagging software exists. I highly recommend EasyTag. EasyTAG is a utility for viewing and editing tags for MP3, MP2, MP4/AAC, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, MusePack, Monkey’s Audio and WavPack files. The intuitive interface makes tagging easier under Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and Windows. You can add images to files and its built-in CDDB support and powerful file renaming utility are a breeze. Better still, it’s well maintained and is completely free.

How to use EasyTag?

The EasyTag main window is split into two parts: a file browser on the left, and the tag editor on the right. When you select a directory EasyTag automatically scans each file within the directory. You have the choice of selecting one or more files to edit. This is a powerful feature as you can edit a particular tag field for multiple files at the same time. You can preview your changes before saving. Check out the EasyTag help or documentation for more details.

EasyTag is powerful tool for keeping your music collection in order, enabling you to find your favorite tracks quickly and access all the information about them. A tagged music collection is a happy music collection.

Flying free on Bandcamp: Danseizure – ‘This is Danseizure’ now available

Danseizure a.k.a Dan Gorman has been with us since our inception in 2000. His previous albums ‘At Home with’ and ‘Let’s not go out’ were released free of charge in 2002 and 2005 respectively. Since then, thousands of listeners have enjoyed Dan’s wonderful creations. The monster track ‘throw’ sparkled and stood out on the first Invisible Agent compilation ‘we are not your friends’. 100 handmade CDs were given away for free at Temple Bar Music Centre (Ireland) in 2003 and the release was immediately available for free download ever since.

Three is the magic number

I was excited when Dan approached me to release his 3rd album and latest masterpiece ‘This is Danseizure’. A 10 track journey encompassing sumptuous Skweee, engaging Electronica and melodic Electro. It’s Dan’s most accomplished work yet.

Dedicated to all those who were there for the journeys

From Dublin to Edinburgh, a monastery in Damascus, Syria or a WWII bunker in Berlin, Dan is always making field recordings and conjuring up new aural creations for all to enjoy. Here’s a little synopsis Dan gave us…

This album was made over the course of 3 years of traveling. Music comes on without warning, swells up in my head and then bullies me into making something that sounds like it. That’s what this album is, a nod of recognition towards the sounds in my head. Dedicated to all those who were there for the journeys, and especially to those who have moved on to their own journeys. – Dan Gorman

Album - Danseizure - This is Danseizure

Flying free on Bandcamp

It gives me great please to release Dan’s latest album ‘This is Danseizure’ as a Creative Commons release, free for all to enjoy. We’ve released it free via the nice folks over at bandcamp. If you like it, share it with your friends. If you want to support future releases from Dan and friends on Invisible Agent, you can purchase the album by naming your price. Pretty cool!

Others have recognized Dan’s talent and the emotions he captures in his work…

At once energetic, ambient, and brimming with both field recordings and original sounds, the appeal of Danseizure‘s LP “This is Danseizure” lies in his ability to grasp the ephemeral, detailed mystery of countless moments, all in the span of ten tracks. – Katie Weed – Dovetail website

Ghostkid: Things That Go Dub In The Night – Reviewed

It’s about 4 months since I first heard Donny Jankowski’s maiden release The Unlikely Future of Reverse Engineering. His latest album ‘Things That Go Dub In The Night’ on BFW Recordings consists of 7 tracks of dubby electronica and mellow breaks.

The makings

Donny intertwines melodic highs, jittery stabs and stripped down breakbeats, layered over rotund but sleek sub-bass. What identifies Donny is the concord of grainy distortion, tunefulness and his signature snare. Just when you think you’re feeling melancholic you realize you’ve a big grin on your face as you drift from pitch bent keying to circus like themes. Sweeping synths and stuttered arps dash the warbling bass. Danny certainly stamps his mark with his second release on the BFW Netlabel and this album contains some very strong tracks.

Download it now!

Ghostkid solidifies his sound on this colourful and laid back electronica album. It is well produced and I will definitely taking my picks from it for upcoming DJ slots and podcasts.

This release is Netaudio and Creative commons. Please check out Ghostkid and other artists over at BFW Recordings and give them the support they deserve.

Netabel Tracker #11: Born Digital – A new audiovisual Netlabel is born

It’s clear that the quality and frequency of Netlabel releases has ascended over the past few months. It’s encouraging to see sustained activity and interest for Netaudio on twitter and of course the ‘return to’ sites for all things Creative Commons such as INQ Magazine and Netlabelism. There are so many active record labels releasing top quality EPs and albums covering so many genres it’s hard to ignore the surge. The wave of progress is not just made up of audio, there are many excellent visual and new media artists at the forefront of the Netlabel movement.

Exploring new media & creative collaboration

A media collective called Born Digital has just launched as a new audiovisual Netlabel. The individuals involved are experience and professional audio and visual producers. Boasting a list of versatile multimedia artists that includes Marsman, Takuma Nakata, Jonathan Read, Julien Mier, Daan Kars and Zumi, they’re set to push the Netlabel cause even further. For more information visit their website netlabel information page.

First release: “Passenger” by Julien Mier (music) & Daan Kars (visuals)

The quality or work is apparent in this 28 minute long album with sound by the very talented Julien Mier and superb visuals from the guru Daan Kars. I’ve listened to many of Julien’s earlier releases on various Netlabels. His ability to deliver emotional and engaging melodies is always second to none. And as an experienced visual artist myself in the past, I found Daan’s shots, edits and effects inspiring, enough to keep me transfixed for 28 minutes. I was very impressed and I know you will be too.

Check out their high definition video on Vimeo and be sure to show them some love by leaving a comment or checking out their website. Until next time, take care.

little bit of bass little bit of drum… eclectic mix by Warren Daly

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This mix is pretty eclectic. I kick off with a little drum and bass and drop in some memorizing electronica. Meandering though some broken beats, I bounce in some 4/4 with a few layers of deep and funky bass, rounding it all off with some wobbly dubstep. It was fun to mix, I hope you enjoy it.

All the tracks are Netaudio and Creative commons. Talented artists want you to enjoy their fantastic music, please share the love. If you like what you hear, check out the artists at their Netlabel homes below and give them the support they deserve.
