I compiled a list of my favorite tracks from the past year or so. It took me a few weeks and I managed to select 80 in total, ranging from Ambient, Bass, to Electronica. The task of mixing them together exposed a particular conundrum, was I allowed to utilize tracks from 2011? Surely I could be flexible, especially if they complemented my selection and made the mix flow better? Since I used a handful of tracks from previous years, I’ve not given the mix an official title of ‘Best of 2012′ but you get the idea. I hope you enjoy the mix.

I created this mix because I was inspired by one of Ambienteer’s blog entries a few months ago. James wrote about using an old 70′s transistor radio to listen to shortwave transmissions. He recorded samples from the radio, and distorted and looped them to use as elements in a number of his tracks. After reading about these endeavors I began collecting music that reminded me of the tones, phase shifting or noises you would find on the HF bands. I remember listening to broadcasts from the International Space Station and numbers stations using a Sony ICF-2010 receiver so every time I discovered a track with a similar characteristic to these broadcasts I put it aside for this mix.
Modulations
The opening track by Ambienteer uses samples from the Russian space program ‘Soyuz’, amazingly this program started in 1967 and is still in use today. James obtained the samples from Sven Grahn who has a repository of samples of various satellites recorded near Stockholm, Sweden. Gurdonark’s weirdbient track Katykids reminds me of the selcal tones used to communicate with aircraft, check out his new album and other fantastic releases on the We Are All Ghosts Netlabel.
I’m delighted to hear the Archaic Horizon Netlabel has some new releases out. Dance of the Cryptids by Heroines of the U.S.S.R and Earlyguard’s epic Habitat phase back and forth like the effects of tropospheric propagation. Nice by Luis Marte has an off kilter warble, similar to that of RTTY data transmissions. Yggdrasil by Artificial Sun Project has eerie samples of numbers stations and a few of the other tracks contain elements that remind me of the infamous Russian Woodpecker.. Fond memories indeed, I’ll have to throw a wire out the window and fire up the receiver soon.
Thanks to Basil for the cover photograph. Discover more of his beautiful photographs here Until next time, enjoy the transmission.

Ambient textures and chilled out soundscapes feature in this 90 minute mix by Warren Daly. Bask in the found sounds and piano melodies layered over tranquil compositions.
The connoisseurs of ambient are assembled in this halcyon mix. Once again the prolific and talented Bing Satellites frequents this mix.
Bruno Sanfilippo has an impressive back catalog stretching back to the early 90′s. Originally from Argentina, Bruno runs the ad21 label and this is the first time I have included one of his compositions in one of my podcasts.
Great to hear a fresh release from Leonardo Rosado on the Laverna Netlabel. I’m hoping his FeedbackLoop Netlabel will release new works in the not to distant future.
Porya Hatami is an ambient and experimental sound artist based in Iran. He merges electronics and environmental recordings with wonderful details and fading patterns. An absolute must for any ambient collector.
On the 31st of August 2012 I tuned in to a live Internet broadcast by Earlyguard. It was an abstract and minimal affair made up of evolving drones and pads. At the time I had no way of recording the live stream. I’m delighted that he recording and released his performance for folks who missed the broadcast to enjoy.
Phillip Wilkerson focuses on atmospheric sound-fields and ambient drones. His previous releases can be found on the excellent Earth Mantra and Free Floating netlabels. Alex Leonard a.k.a Ebauche is working on a number of tracks that will be released soon on Invisible Agent Records. Glad I could give you a sneak preview of what he’s working on.
Mix number 42 in the AgentCast series. The podcast series covers a range of genres, including but not confined to Bass, Electronica, Electro, Techno, Dubstep and Breaks from Netlabels
What’s in this mix?
I’m pretty busy working on 2 other major projects, so this mix is a little shorter then usual. It’s a swift blend of Downtempo, Dub orientated numbers and a bit of wobbly bass music with a dash of glitch. Tasty!
Mix 41 in the AgentCast series. The podcast series covers a range of genres, including but not confined to Bass, Electronica, Electro, Techno, Dubstep and Breaks. Essentially anything with a touch of electronics. I like to include high quality Netlabel music if possible. (Actually I do that a lot)
What’s in this mix?
Soothing soundscapes, down-tempo beats and ambient goodness await you in this 90 minute mix. It’s another all Netlabel podcast. Thanks to Alex for the cover photo of an isolated footbridge near Ballycastle, Ireland. Check out Alex’s photo blog for more excellent photographs.

Meandering through electronica, ambient, and improvised recordings, I discovered some excellent artists I’ve never heard before. All 13 tracks are recommendations, but I usually mention artists I’ve just discovered. Please don’t get upset if I didn’t mention you, I’ve either recommended you before or I’m about to use more of your excellent creations in an upcoming mix. If you’re at the helm of a netlabel I try my best to promote you on my netlabel review.
Chris Whitehead‘s release South Gare combines natural and industrial sounds and explores sonic spaces between them. A perfect mix of such wonderful field recordings. Chris is certainly another artist for the RSS feeder. Nigul has a treasure trove of Ambient compositions available on Bandcamp. He’s been producing since 2005 and is another purveyor of quality netlabel music. I included a track by Hirobeep, he likes to produce retro 303 infused electro. However, Belt of Orion is very laid back and a great example of his diversity.
A new Netlabel and definitely one to watch out for is We Are All Ghosts. Started by Thomas Mathie aka Headphonaught. Based in Scotland this fabulous netlabel specializes in Ambient Electronic Soundscapes and other genres. I thoroughly enjoy Apta‘s melodic post-rock electronica. I can’t wait to hear more from this Netlabel and from Apta.
So, there you have it. Enough genre boxing, now it’s time to get on with the music. I hope you enjoy the mix, please leave comments below.

I’m back with more beats as I mix it up with everything from Dubstep to Electro, Breakbeat to Drum and Bass. All Netlabel as always. Another fine edition to my expanding collection of podcasts. 3 Invisible Agent acts feature on this mix, Undermine, Decal, and a track from an upcoming album by Ketsa. Thanks to Basil for the cover photo of Rotterdam City, Netherlands. Another beautiful image from his Skanvas project.
Netlabel Music Recommendations
Neuroplastic is building up a fine back catalog of tasty bass music. Cut Records deliver even more super polished bass heavy tunes, pure quality. Big shout out to Andy a.k.a A-Force and the Irish collective alphabetset. Another phenomenal composition by adapt. The Netlabel scene is going from strength to strength these days. Enjoy the mix and be sure to leave a comment below.

After a 3 week hiatus I’m back in South East Asia. During a 12 hour flight to Europe I found my previous podcasts invaluable for relaxation and to break the monotony of airport security. I’ve had several requests to make my mixes longer. So I’m going to try my best over the coming months to break 70 minutes on the beat orientated mixes and 90 minutes for the ambient excursions.
Sam Grinsell doesn’t normally do electronic orientated works, I like his fusion of guitar effects and distortion. I always take note of shares on Twitter by @vuzhmusic, for this mix I used a track by the one and only C. Reider.
Please check out a great new netlabel We Are All Ghosts, with a strong roster of artists including Apta, who will feature in a future mix, this label is off to a great start. In this mix I used a track by the very talented Cousin Silas.
I also highly recommend following Free Floating Music on twitter @ffloating and check out the amazing music released on the freefloatingmusic netlabel. Daniel Robert Lahey is a new find for me, another very talented artist who comes highly recommended.

Masterfully mixed 4/4 beats and bass with a tribal influence
Todd Elliott a.k.a Toaster steps up and shows off his mixing skills in this 1 hour mix of beats and bass. Not only is Todd a skilled DJ he composes beautiful music too. Podcast – Mixing the best of Netlabel Techno and Bass Music
Starting out with some bass heavy goodness, I ease into some more laid back 4/4 grooves. I manage to slip in a vocal driven track by Mr Bitterness and then return to more melodic, minimal Techno influenced numbers. All the tracks are Netlabel releases. Enjoy and please leave comments and feedback. A huge thank you to the talented Basil for his amazing photo on the cover. More great photography can be found on his website skanvas.basdriver.nl

After I recorded this mix I started working on finalizing the text for the track-listing below, I realized that 13 of the 16 tracks were downloaded from Bandcamp. If you’re a listener, record label or musician and you’re not already using Bandcamp, you’re missing out big time.
I have so much respect for the artists and composers on this mix. So much talent, so much lush, deep and melodic compositions. I hope you enjoy the mix. Please comment below and please share the mix with all your friends.
The cover photo is a shot of the Port of Rotterdam, another big thank you to the talented Basil for his amazing photos. More amazing photography can be found on his website skanvas.basdriver.nl
