Swarm Intelligence – On The Edge

Berlin-based Irishman Simon Hayes churns out four tracks covering similar sonic territories: a dark, cold world of skittering percussion, metallic synthlines and pounding bass drums. Strong stuff for the Invisible Agent label – (originally based in Ireland, now South East Asia).

    Repart

A dubstep workout over a 2-bar bassline, with hellza groovy laser-percussion, and dark, processed ambient synthlines dispersing off into the background. My least favourite track on the EP – not enough sticks in the memory…

    On The Edge

The EP’s title track is a kind of industrial electro track which really drives along. The main devices in this music are rhythm and timbre – an ominous bassline lurking in the depths provides the tonal component. This material expands in the last 30 seconds of the track.

    Once Bitten

Another industrial electro pounder featuring a rhythmically adventurous bout of wonky half-time feel. The synth chords add an interesting texture, coming in and out, sometimes sustaining for a bar before the beats kick back in.

    Gomb

Ravy stabs cut up over dubsteppy beats… The bass drum is massive in general on the EP, but especially on this track. It sounds like a lot of work went into the detail of the production, and I’d love to hear what this track would do to a large system. The percussion has a slightly laid back, live feel which is one of the hardest things to nail for electronic musicmakers I reckon. As Duke said “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”

    Overall

Great work here, especially the bass drum and percussion. The production vibe gives it a strongly dark atmosphere… also cold, due to the lack of 3rds in the chords and no melodies. For me this is music that works better played out loud rather than on earphones, (which is a drawback), but Swarm Intelligence is definitely a producer I’ll keep an ear out for.
